COCDC INFO FOR NEW AND ASPIRING DANCERS

If you have ventured here, you are probably a new or prospective dancer. If so, welcome to the world of square, round, and line dancing. Modern square dancing can be found in every state of the Union as well as all the Canadian provinces and in more than 50 countries abroad. You can literally square dance your way around the world. Square dance clubs meet in smoke-free and alcohol-free environments such as churches and schools, park and recreation halls, community halls, and various private facilities. This activity is suited for both couples, singles, and families.

Healthful Exercise

It's true: You can get your much needed exercise by square dancing. In one study, researchers attached pedometers to square dancers and found each person covered over four miles in a single evening. From burning calories to socializing with friends, dancing offers these health benefits:

Calories: Dancing can burn as many calories as walking, swimming, or riding a bicycle. During a half hour of sustained dancing you can burn between 200 and 400 calories.

Cardiovascular conditioning: Regular exercise can lead to a slower heart rate, lower blood pressure, and an improved cholesterol profile. Experts recommend 30 to 40 minutes of continuous activity three to four times a week. Dancing may not provide all the conditioning you need, but it can help.

Strong bones: The side-to-side movements of many dances strengthen your weight-bearing bones and can help prevent or slow loss of bone mass.

Rehabilitation: If you are recovering from heart or knee surgery, movement may be a part of your rehabilitation. Dancing can be a positive alternative to aerobic dance or jogging.

Sociability: Dancing contains a social component that solitary fitness endeavors don't. It gives you an opportunity to develop strong social ties which contribute to self esteem and a positive mental outlook.

Mental acumen: Dancing, and especially learning to dance, is a fun but non-trivial mental exercise. As with the mastery of any such task, it forces the mind to develop new pathways, and helps keep the brain pliable.

Many doctors stress that a healthy lifestyle and positive mental attitude are important factors to a healthy and satisfying life. Square and related dance activities are terrific ways to exercise and help maintain your cardiovascular system. These are the types of wellness activities that everyone should be involved with all their lives.
